Dolores Park

Ahh yes, San Francisco, the City by the Bay; The city that brought us Harvey Milk and the Summer of Love and the Zodiac killer. The city that’s so fabulous to live in people routinely pay over a thousand dollars a month to live in teeny tiny studios with rice-paper thin walls.

So what’s the hype for this urban utopia? Well, duh. The city is especially rich in culture, there’s delicious food everywhere you turn, free yoga classes, always a dance party and the weather is perfect. Not “perfect” meaning 70 degrees and sunny all the time but perfect as in a constant state of fall/spring with a little summer sprinkled in there. Oh yeah, and I’m pretty sure no one ever ages here—everyone is always 20s-40s-ish.

There’s nothing more hip young people love than to see and be seen. And even if you aren’t a dotcom millionaire or young advertising exec, even if all your money truly goes to rent on that teeny tiny studio apartment, San Francisco has just the place for ya. So grab a couple Tecate tallboys from the corner store and head to the “hippest” part of town, Mission Dolores Park.

Never before has a beautiful, city-maintained, open space been such a “scene.” Any sunny day (and sometimes not so sunny days too) will attract a crowd.  Imagine that you’re at your favorite bar, wearing your favorite outfit, with all your friends and really, really cheap drinks. You’re at Dolores Park, enjoy it.

The park is home to plenty of unique events including free movies in the park, concerts, LGBT Pride Celebrations, and my personal favorite the Hunky Jesus competition held on Easter Sunday.

Some people pretend it’s the beach stripping down to their bathing suits to sunbathe while others pretend it’s their bedroom stripping down to their birthday suits. Just about anything goes within park limits. If you hang around for more than an hour you will assuredly be approached by someone selling “edibles”, a kid with a bongo, 52 kids with “fixies” and a series of adorable puppies. It’s almost too much but then again it’s just enough. This is the true California way of life; the super mellow, no agenda, slightly buzzed, sunshine soak-up. This is Dolores Park, my first San Francisco love.
