Fry Vs. Frey: Blood and Flannel

Two Pittsburgh-area artists duke it out with a new art installation

Meet Johnny Fry and John Freyvogel two Pittsburgh area natives who not only share a nickname, fashion sense and friends but also a passion and talent for (oh so) fine art.

During the week both J.Fry’s work as tattooists (Fry at Unique Ink in Greensburg, PA and Freyvogel at Bodyworks in Pittsburgh, PA) but in their spare time both take to their easels creating alluring, often times compelling, images with paint. While Freyvogel opts for realism in oils, Fry works in watercolors giving his rendition of vintage American tattoo style.

On Saturday, January 8 the pair displayed their most recent works for a show titled Fry Vs. Frey: Blood and Flannel (a nod to their shared style of dress). The opening reception was hosted by Artform Gallery and Tattoo in Lower Burrell, PA. Dozens of original works of art adorned the walls spotlighting each artist’s distinctive style. Cocktails were had, jokes were told, and paintings were sold!
