Before the years of drinking and smoking Waits voice was know for a warm clean tone. These days his gruff baritone is his calling card.

Note: I don’t know where the info came from, but the shot of him in the dressing room with the stripper is from the Small Change cover photo session from ’75 or ’76. He wasn’t anywhere near the Lower East Side in 1970.
