Damn the man! Save the Empire!

Similar to Clueless, this soundtrack was a mid-90s pre-teen’s wet dream. I actually purchased this CD [yes, from Sam Goody at the mall] before I’d ever had the pleasure of seeing the movie. The thing is, I saw the trailer for the movie and being the striving alternative gal that I was, I knew the soundtrack was a cool kid necessity.  I was totally right.

Not only do I still consistently quote this movie in 2011, I also still actively listen to the soundtrack. Hits like Edwyn Collins’ “Girl Like You” and the epic Coyote Shivers* jam “Sugarhigh” ensure this soundtrack’s staying power. Put it this way, if you pop this album on at a party today people will like it. Which is why I have it saved as a playlist on my iPod.

P.S. I believe the film was only a limited release meaning it never made it to suburban Pittsburgh cinemas. I had to wait for the VHS.

*I stood next to Coyote Shivers once at CBGB’s. It was at the Dictator’s 30th Anniversary Reunion show. He ran past me up to the stage to play with the Star Spangles and my heart almost exploded. Swoon!

Choice cuts:

The Martinis- Free
Ape Hangers- Don’t Want to Live Today
Gin Blossoms - Til I Hear It From You

Video age: Edwyn Collins- Girl Like You

Not on the official soundtrack but still in the movie and still awesome:

AC/DC- If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)
Queen Sarah Saturday – Seems
The Buggles- Video Killed the Radio Star
