Babycakes serves up the best in gluten-free & vegan confections
“Ouch”! That was my heart breaking as I pass yet another trendy cupcakery whose tasty delights are not made for my kind. While I’m glad I discovered my wheat allergy 3 years ago, not being able to sink my teeth into a good old-fashioned cupcake is just unfair. Hey, I’ve liked cupcakes for a long time, even before they were cool, but their recent uprising of popularity has made avoiding them in public a lot more complicated.
Lucky for me New York City understands and that’s why the great city produced the most conscientious cupcake shop in the country, Babycakes NYC! Gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, no refined sugar and delicious? Yup.

It was raining on a Saturday afternoon in October when I first began my love affair with Babycakes. My best friend wanted to surprise me with a special birthday treat so we trekked from Philadelphia [via the Chinatown bus—an adventure on its own] to the Lower East Side in search of tasty confections sans gluten. My heart almost exploded when we entered the tiny, dollhouse-esque bakery. Gluten-free deliciousness as far as the eye could see!

The glutton that I am I purchased one of everything that looked tasty: red velvet, chocolate, carrot, lemon and banana bread. The next 35 minutes were spent in a very exclusive and successful taste test. The shocking part is that they were all good, like, for real. They were soft and delicious not like those other cupcake imposters, the real deal. Owner and baker Erin McKenna removed soy, dairy, casein, eggs, wheat, gluten, and refined sugar yet managed to leave flavor, consistency and, of course, love. Aww!
Babycakes in undoubtedly my new favorite place in New York City! But don’t fret if you’re on the West Coast- Babycakes NYC recently opened in Los Angeles and for you Southerners they’ve opened up shop in Downtown Disney. Oh my!
Health conscious, delicious and in cupcake form—even thinking about getting one of these makes you cooler than your friends.
